External Antenna Hack for MR3020
June 19, 2014 09:00AM
Hi,

has anyone here tried adding an external antenna to the MR3020?
I've found this guide [apollo.open-resource.org]

What would be a good antenna?

Would it be useful? The box may have a wide range, but I'm afraid the client won't have the power to connect.

So I've tried this out like in the guide and I think it turned out nice.

I bought the TP-Link TL-ANT2408CL [www.amazon.de] antenna and an adapter cable [www.amazon.de]
I cut of the small ending there and soldered it to the board. Just had to drill a hole so I could put the connector there.
Did you notive a real improvement in the signal?
How can you be sure it is working?

Cool mod.
I have a 3040 and would like to try this as well.
How much is range improved? and what effect does it have on batter life?

I was wondering if this could be done now i know it can so I just ordered the R3040 from walmart. Im picking it up today. Is there somewhere you can link that gives a tutorial on how to do this? New member soon to be joining (smiles)

I decided to go with the TP-Link TL-WDR4300 instead it has a 560 mhz 8meg flash and 128 ram and if i wanted i could make it mobile as well. I also like the 3 external antenna setup which would allow me to choose the height of the antennas if thats an issue. its also ready for a portable external hard drive if i want to use one. (I realize the main value of this pirate box idea is you dont have to dedicate a pc 24/7 for this use and this is made to run 24/7 and its not windows based)
