Telnet and SSH Putty timeout

Hi guys,
I have the TPlink 3040. I followed the instructions to load open WRT on the device and I'm trying to finish the setup. I am using Putty on a win 7 laptop trying to connect to the device. I have the ethernet cable directly from the laptop ethernet port to the TL-link device.
I can telnet in and see the open WRT page but then the screen is locked, I cant type anything, and Putty gives a Fatal Error with the message "Network error
oftware caused connection abort" after a few seconds.
Under the connection tab, I've enabled "Enable TCP keep alive", and also set the seconds to keep alive to 2. Still, it gives a software timeout.
Anyone else experience the same issue ? Thoughts please?
