smoking smiley Special Image for MR3020

Because there are so many problems in Connecting the MR3020 to the internet, I created a new Image which contains the following modifications:

* All needed drivers for the usb-drive
* After flashing you can connect the MR3020 to your home network and it will get an IP via your dhcp (instead you have to find your device with ping our lookup at the router)
* Drivers for batman-mesh network (its a step to enhance a later improvement )

The Detailed installation howto can you find here: github-custom Install on MR3020

It does not include the piratebox-package, but look at this thread for install the new version with shoutbox.

For me, It works fine!

If you encounter problems:

I'm sorry for long response times, it is still my free time project.

Thank you very much Matthias !

Does this installation include the chatbox ?

Hi,
the package does not include the piratebox-package itself.
But you can easily install it.

Currently, I'm thinking about changing the install-process of the piratebox-package that it is possible to pre-install it.

Thank you Matthias.

I've started to look at the custom installation, but I don't understand step 2.
When I click the link I see a config file and some unknown firmware files?
What exactly do I need to use as firmware? Is it the .config file or the openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-mr3020-v1-squashfs-factory.bin ?

greetings

Just received the MR3020 router, so I'm going to try to create the piratebox today.

openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-mr3020-v1-squashfs-factory.bin

Like described here: [sites.google.com]

Connect your MR 3020 to your computer via an ethernet cable. You should be able to log into the management console by navigating to 192.168.0.254. Default Username and Password: admin

Go to "System Tools---> Firmware Upgrade"

The Firmware upgrade was finished successfully, but there are so many different instructions for this...
I followed the one on the wiki after this build, but the box doesn't get an ip address...

Do I need to do this with the USB stick attached? In WISP mode?
I really don't get the wiki... it's rather complicated.

When I load this firmware you mentionned, and I adjust the files in Vi (I'm at the part where I just backed up the firewall settings file and need to power cycle the router). After that, the box doesn't do anything, can't connect from within my LAN towards the box. (However when directly connected it is still 192.168.1.1 but no telnet or ssh possible. Strange

Can you help me out?

Hi,
did you connect the box to your local lan?
Did you lookup the mac adress first, instead you have to try every ip in your ipadress range i.e. 192.168.1.2 -> 192.168.1.254 to telnet the box after flashing. When you flash my Image, you'll recieve a piratebox _withou_ an IP only looking up from your homeip.
So Connect the box to your router or whatever before you power it on.
A directly between laptop and MR3020 does not work.

Hi,
I uploaded a new Image with has a static IP on default.

No, I didn't have to try every IP to get to SSH to the box. I just changed the network file in vi to have it on 192.168.16.5 in my case (my network is 192.168.16.1 / 24)

Either method works... I didn't need the mac address of the router this way because I knew it would be on 192.168.16.5.

Getting the router online and connectable from another station is not a problem at all anymore with your new custom build.

Next step is to upgrade it from the 0.2.5 to 0.3.4 version. Can't I just do this by formatting the USB stick, and unpacking all 0.3.4 piratebox files on there?

If you have internet connection on the MR3020:

Clean your USB Stick and follow these instructions: [github.com]

Sidenote: Cleaning USB Stick is the noobish clearest version. You only need to remove the existing piratebox_img.gz file. The other ones will be updates

Can someone please please make an explain it like I'm five video tutorial that shows installation from unboxing to finish? I do not have the skills, yet, but I could do it with a little guidance. I could, in return, make a video of how to solder a torn down USB inside the 3020 and put in a rechargeable battery that uses the mini USB port to charge or even a small solar cell cover retrofit.

Hi Facelessace,
a Video, huh?
It is not so problematic, there are really good howtos. What exactly is the point which you are feared of?

Stéphane Bortzmeyer, a french software developer from AFNIC suggest to use Babel (RFC 6126) or RPL (RFC 6550) rather than Batman (Capitalism vs God)

The Babel Routing Protocol
RPL: IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low power and Lossy Networks

There is a comparison here :

Thanks for all the work you do for the PirateBox

Hi Gastlag,
I read a lot stuff last year, havent read anything about babel.
I tried Batman on Layer 3 and Batman on Layer 2. Batman on Layer 2 is nothing than a software "switch or hub" over wireless, which is a comfortable solution. I can see if it works and then do the ip stuff.

So, a year later IPv6 is even better supported, so I can say: "lets do the layer3 approach" .. but I'm not so comfortable with the ipv6 configuration. So whatever.
If batman is included on a firmware or not is not the point. I'll put the dependencies in a way, that the <whatever>-package will be installed too.

I'll have a look at babeld,

But I think the better approach may be the new IEEE 802.11s standard, which didn't work correctly on my first tests.
