I dont have a case...yet. But I've made some style edits, mainly just a background color change, and new buttons styles as well as few other little edits to make it all mesh nicely. There's also a device information card with some info on the device. I also just added a little warning text as I intend on carrying it around and figured people should know the connection may be lost.

Custom CSS Changes & Additions Here

Work in progress. I'll be bringing it to ToorCamp.

The heart of it is an Odroid XU running Debian Jessie. Storage is provided by a 120gb samsung SSD over USB 3.0. I've clocked it at 95MB/s. WiFi is a TL-WN7200ND with +9.5dbi omni antenna. Power is provided by the EverStart 200,000mah "portable" power supply. It will be supplemented with a 20W solar cell to keep it running over the course of the camp.

Finished (almost)!

The last thing I'm adding is a current monitor. I've already added a Teensy to monitor supply voltage, and the plan is to add a current monitor for total power consumption monitoring.

Looks like an fashioned Brownie Camera.... until you open it up. The MR-3020 fits in easily (with the film carrier removed). My USB battery pack is a bit long with the cable plugged in, have a new smaller square one on order. Maybe I can rig up some blinking lights.

My TL-MR3040 with an Intel X25-M 80GB SSD in an external USB case, and a Coolook PB-2000 powerbank with 4x3400 mAh 18650 batteries.

And a hook & loop cinch strap to hold it all together.

The drawing bled when i added a protective spray, but didn't mess up too bad. So far only some books, a few mp3s, and 2048 on it, but so far no one to share with anyway.

Here's my PirateBox, aka "nanonet", running yesterday's development snapshot software on an TL-MR3040v2.2.

I'm in the process of customizing its web site and stocking its file area with relevant material to help me promote a software literacy project I'm starting up here in Fresno, California. We'll be hosting "The Hour of Code" the entire week of December 8th-14th.

I'm making my customizations on a separate local branch, and updating files on the device when I need to either by editing them with vi over ssh, or by transferring them from my desktop via scp. So far, it's amounted to tweaking the index page and the stylesheet, and adding a .png file with a new logo. Works fine.



PirateBox is prominently mentioned in the "About" section (although, for this use, I've toned down the "anonymous" pitch in favor of a more "Here's something you could learn to program!" messaging, for reasons that I hope are fairly obvious.) I'm planning on taking the "NanoNet" around town to use it to both raise awareness of the program and try to shake down prospective donors for funding.

After the first of the year, I plan to offer regular after-school and evening programs in

— Scratch (for 7 to 11 year olds)
— Processing (12 and up)
— Arduino/Raspberry Pi and "The Internet of Things"
— Web design (HTML5/CSS3) and development, starting from either Javascript or Python

We're also just about to be listed as an official CoderDojo, and we'll be hosting Girl Develop It! events as well.

I posted a picture earlier in this thread of my Piratebox-in-a-book... but I've added a few more to the family since then. From left to right: TP-LINK MR10U with a Kingston Digital 64GB DataTraveler, two MR3040s with 64GB SanDisk Cruzer Fits, and a MR3020 with a 32GB SanDisk Cruzer Fit and a PowerGen 6000mAh battery. :-D

I call them "Stable" and "Beta".

Beta one has serial cable and is used only with 16GB flash drive and powered via USB from my PC.

Stable has no hardware modifications inside box. Has 320GB HDD and is powered via AC adapter (when hidden in server room) or via 10.000mAh power bank.

Posted this over at /r/piratebox a couple months ago. I've since bricked the mr3040 but the pi(rate)box is running strong.



The solar panel is a Joos Orange and has a built in 5,400mAh battery that may need replacing. Once I figure out how to run cables out of my pelican case it'll good to go... at least for limited testing.

Going forward I'd like to rig something like this to turn on during sunlight hours and off once the power falls to a certain point.

Moved it from my Pi to my ESXi server. VPN from remote access, or shared via WiFi on WLAN for guests.
