What's the status of mesh networking?

I installed one piratebox and it looks like a lan.

Are people working on a mesh version?
If so, how far is it along?

Technical, the infrastructure (IPv6 Backend via BATMAN-adv) can be setup and get it working.
But, there is no application working across the mesh network.

There has been almost no interest in mesh networking because you never see two pirateboxes physically close enough to connect. It's just not a widely-used project, so there's little use for mesh functionality.
