How do i change the text on the home page/network name? For reasons that are mostly to make my pirate box not look guilty, i want to change its name in all contexts. is this possible?

Hey Krazipanda,

You can change the name of your PB by SSH'ing into your PB and editing the wireless file via vi.

For example:
vi /etc/config/wireless

Any questions just ask.

Peace,
Dr H

and how would i edit the main page?

With the image on the mainpage you could either delete or replace the image here:
/opt/piratebox/src/piratebox-logo-small.png

You can make changes to the chat box text in these files:
/opt/piratebox/chat/index.html
/opt/piratebox/chat/cgi-bin/data.pso - chatbox name
/opt/piratebox/chat/cgi-bin/style.css - chat css

Good luck!

And with version 0.3.2 you ave to edit:

/opt/piratebox/conf/piratebox.conf

There are some Text-Messages.
You have to exchange the pictures in /mnt/usb/PirateBox/Share AND in /opt/piratebox/src

I was able to corrupt the file so that it wouldn't show anymore, but how would i be able to actually change it/remove it completely?

Depending on your version-tag in /opt/piratebox you can remove the shoutbox from your landing page. find:

#Chatbox
# Change the not commented line to en- and disable Chat
# CHAT_BOX_HTML=""
CHAT_BOX_HTML="<iframe height='400px' width='50%' frameBorder='0' scrolling='0'  src='[$HOST];

edit: I started to write this kind of stuff down here: [piratebox.aod-rpg.de]

Is it possible to also change the domain name on LAN? I want to remove any trace of this being a "pirate box"

also, what would be the best way to change the image? you guys say "go here to change it" but i have no idea what to do to the actual file

Hi,
you want to change the domain name from piratebox.lan to something different?

Ok, for this you have to do several steps:

1. Edit /opt/piratebox/conf/piratebox.conf find this line:
#HOSTNAME ... if you really want to change it, plz change:
# bin/droopy
# conf/hosts
HOST="piratebox.lan"

2. Add the new name in /opt/piratebox/conf/hosts
192.168.1.1 piratebox.lan
192.168.1.1 piratebox

You can "simply" upload new images with droopy or copy your stuff over to the usb stick while your PirateBox is shut down.

but people list locations like /opt/, and i don't see any of those on the usb drive...

Yes that is right.
You have two possibilities:

a) Copy over your stuff on the usb stick, Plug the usb stick on your PirateBox again, login and copy your files to with telnet/ssh to /opt/piratebox
b) Plugin your USB device to your computer, which have to run linux, then run as root or with sudo

mkdir -p /tmp/opt/piratebox
mount -o loop,rw,sync <mount-point of USB>/PirateBox/pbIMG.img /tmp/opt/piratebox

now you can edit/copy over your stuff to /tmp/opt/piratebox.
After all your changes are done run

# umount /tmp/opt/piratebox

then unplug your usb device and bootup your piratebox again smiling smiley

Where does it show up and under which conditions?

it shows up in the address bar, and under any conditions except when using un-common URL endings .ly, .us, etc.

You are using piratebox-0.3.2 , right?

If you changed everything correctly, there are only the README.htm and BACKTOMENU.htm files left, that comes in my mind.
With 0.3.2 there is no really redirect...

I'm going to check this, when I'm back home-- but I'm a bit surprised about that problem.

this morning, I got the idea, which point I left out:

change if you are using 0.5.1 lighttpd based:
/opt/piratebox/www/redirect.html

redirect.html in github There is a static redirect to piratebox.lan (I'm wondering about it, because I thought, I changed it to ./ instead of a domain name )

So my friends and I just built a Piratebox, and we successfully changed the name of it, like Dr H said in the second post on the thread, but we were wondering if we could put a security key onto the Piratebox. We noticed that right next to the place where you change the name of the Piratebox, there is a line that says "option encription 'none'" but we weren't sure if changing that 'none' to something else would mess us all up.

Thanks.

Hi,
check this OpenWRT - wireless configuration page.
That should help.

Matthias
Just set up a new Pirate Box on TP-Link 3020. It is up and running. I have tried to rename the SSID but it keeps coming back permission denied thoughts?

root@oRzRxBkX:-# /etc/config/wireless
-ash: /etc/config/wireless: Permission denied

Thanks

oh well, try re-read the manual. you need to put "vi" in front of it for adjusting the configuration

Occasionally, when I go in to change the SSID on a PirateBox, the wireless file is all tildes, preventing editing. What happened? (I'm totally new to this and have no background in CS, btw)
I'm using puTTY to connect to the device via SSH, and it appears to working fine otherwise. Thanks!

Are you editing with vi?

If so, you have to press "i" to enter edit mode (once the file is opened), which you can later quit with "Esc" once you finished making the changes.

A cheat sheet like this is always useful: http://www.lagmonster.org/docs/vi.html

Thank you- I ended up connecting to the same PB later on using my macbook and the conf file contents were correct and editable. I must've been doing something out of order. That cheatsheet is great; THANKS!
I ve tried to change ssid and wirless security by changing and saving the settings of hostapd file afterwards i rebooted the piratebox now it is not appearing in the networks to connect with
You have to be careful with the naming of the ssid. I found that my name was too long and it wasn't showing up. I'm not sure about the limitations (I'm sure there are some characters that cannot be included). I couldn't find anything that had explicit limitations, but consider those.
