PirateBox is setup and inactive but the USB key is always blinking
December 11, 2017 10:19PM
TP-Link TL-WR1043ND v1.8 : I have install with success the PirateBox (current version 1.1.3 with current OpenWRT), and I wish to understand why the USB key is always active (blinking), for hours and hours.

Is it because this device has 32 MB of RAM ? (v2+ has 64 Mcool smiley.

Some technical infos:

Re: PirateBox is setup and inactive but the USB key is always blinking
December 12, 2017 04:23AM
If you enabled the timesafe function, it stores the current time every five minutes on the USB stick.
There is also a few kB swap disk used, which is also on the USB stick. This is possibly another reason for frequent activity.
If you run minidlna (you do not), it will scan for new files regularly as well.

You can try to reduce the swap usage to a minimum with reducing the swappiness.
You can verify the swappiness running
 cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness
.
I do not have a device by hand right now, so the generic recommendation is to add this line in /etc/rc.local and perform a reboot:
echo "1" > /proc/sys/vm/swappiness

Sorry, I forgot to say that I have not done the 'Post installation' steps ( [piratebox.cc] ) : Kareha and UPnP are not running.

The USB key ("TOSHIBA TransMemory (1.00)", 32 GB, USB2) is blinking every second, like there was a heavy read (or write) activity. The normal behavior when plugged to my computer is no blinking when the USB key is not active.

Any comment about the 32 MB vs 64 MB issue ?

> Any comment about the 32 MB vs 64 MB issue ?
this is no issue, the opposite is the case: higher MB should reduce read/write cycles.

the interestig output is already posted in OP, which indicates a healthy system. The recommendation with swappiness might reduce the swap r/w access (which is located on USB stick as well).

Q: Do you have the piratebox.lan page open when observing the blinking? Or is it even with no wifi connection?

There is none Piratebox web page open, and there is none WIFI connection to the PirateBox.

After playing with the command: echo "1" > /proc/sys/vm/swappiness
with 1 and 10 as values (and waiting 10 minutes between tests), I do not see any change, the USB key is still blinking very fast (maybe 4 times / second).

Something else is accessing a lot the USB key, any idea about how to get more infos ?
Re: PirateBox is setup and inactive but the USB key is always blinking

The swappiness has no direct effect as long as the command "free" shows swap usage.

We can try eliminate the theory, that swap is causing the issue, with running

swapoff --all

That command may take a moment, please check afterwards with "free" if the swap memory was removed. If so, check the LED.

If there is still some weird stuff going on, we can work on the writeback times and checkpointing of the ext3 filesystem.

I don't know how to install a additional software tool to monitor the softwares disk activity, but i have find this way to check the general disk activity : cat /sys/block/sda/stat ( [www.kernel.org] ).

Result of my test :

The incredible thing is that it seems there was no disk activity, however the LED has not stop blinking.

Ok. Good finding with the diskstats procfs note. You can refer to this document to get the numbers explained procfs-diskstats @ kernel.org

The number on the 3rd position from right are the IOs on the fly. all are 0.
The number of writes are quite steady and are raising as soon as you visit the box with the smartphone.

I found an interesting forum post, which might be a reason. I did not specify special formatting options.

If you like to test it, I can prepare another OpenWrt.img and PirateBox.img file for the install folder. But you need to reinstall to get that one in place, because this file later contains the installed openwrt packages.

I am interested to test a new build. This blinking gives a bad idea about the lifetime of the USB key, so fixing it may be useful.

Ok, Ill create a custom built. But it will take another day or two, because I need to recreate two set of files.
I already looked into that yesterday and discovered the points were I need to adjust the build.

Ok, quicker then expected. I found some time this morning and hacked quickly the stuff together.

Start with a clean flash of your router, and like an upgrade from 1.1 to 1.1 (you can use the auto_flash feature). Please use the install_piratebox_customEXT4.zip instead of the default one.

How can you see if the changed has worked?

And the ext4 mount point to /mnt/ext should only show around 50MB in the output "df". (I did not make the effort to create on 50MB and one 100MB file in the first place).
Re: PirateBox is setup and inactive but the USB key is always blinking
December 15, 2017 08:16AM
It seems to me that with this new build, USB is not working or PirateBox does not install (how I did: I have copy the new install in the USB device, powered on the router, power off, power on in rescue mode, flashed the firmware, rebooted. The USB key is lighted for some seconds when I power on, then the light is always off, it is still working on my PC) :

Re: PirateBox is setup and inactive but the USB key is always blinking

.. the auto_flash method would have been easier, but ok.

weird.
But it looks like it did not find your USB stick, because nothing about the USB stick is initialized.

to get an idea, I need the output of

 dmesg | tail -n 20
 dmesg | grep sda
 ls /dev/sd*
 ps

What happens after issuing this command on your PirateBox
/bin/box_installer.sh -e

That should give a hint what is wrong. Maybe it is really the new ext4 file (sorry, I didn't have time to test it myself first).

Mh, this message confuses me
Quote

/bin/box_installer.sh : not running extendRoot init, because it already is

I suggest that you retry the process beginning with a reflash and double check the install folder on the USB stick.

After the reflash, wait with inserting the USB stick. The installer is waiting until the USB Stick was inserted.
Login after the reboot, run the following command (the command stays active) and then insert the USB stick:

tail -f /var/log/messages

Give me a copy& paste copy of the content, please.

If you have an install.log on the USB stick, that should be helpful as well...

How can I do that ? because the router automatically restart.

When trying the auto_flash feature, it seem not work (USB Key does not blink).

And the manual 'Reflash using an USB Stick' makes me the feeling of USB driver issue :

Re: PirateBox is setup and inactive but the USB key is always blinking
December 16, 2017 02:18PM
When you are doing it this way, then you need to:

a) check if sda is available in /dev using
ls /dev/sd*
b) you need to mount against /mnt (because /mnt/usb is not available at the failsafe partition)

edit:
If /dev/sda1 does not exists - yes, you might have an issue with the USB stick/driver.

Do you have a answer to this question ? :

Pull the USB stick in the moment the leds turn off, and put it back in after you enabled the output of the messages file.

Re: PirateBox is setup and inactive but the USB key is always blinking
December 18, 2017 07:51PM
the Boxinstaller ended normally.
Double check the install folder, because after finalizing an installation there is no trigger file available to kick in a new installation. The installer is looking for file named "auto_package" and installs the packages listed there, afterwards the processed lines is written to auto_package_done.
This is the reason why it is recommended to place a fresh copy of the install folder after reflashing the device.

Can you please verify, that there is no auto_package file in your install folder?

best regards Matthias

Note: when I do the tests, I don't touch the Install folder.

I seems that I should remove 'auto_package_done' ?, because a 'PirateBox' folder has not be recreated (I renamed mine 'PirateBox OFF').
Re: PirateBox is setup and inactive but the USB key is always blinking

You have to rename auto_package_done to auto_package, that the installer will install the packages.
auto_package is the important file, without this the installer won't install any packages.

Ok I did it, off/on the router, but 1 hour later the USB key is still blinking (note: I see the WIFI 'PirateBox - Share Freely' SSID).

Re: PirateBox is setup and inactive but the USB key is always blinking

Hi,

can you please retry the flashing. I maybe did a mistake in preparing the install_zip for the test. I added a different commit messages in the version file for confirmation. It should look like this:
Quote

$ cat version
piratebox-ws_1.1.3
## ext4-test
67d96d4 Testing different application image file with other ext4 options

I double checked the files and there went something wrong. So please redownload the zip file install_piratebox_customEXT4-v2.zip
And please do the following:

- power the piratebox offline
- remove the install folder
- Place a new copy of install folder based on the linked zip file above to your USB drive
- place a new .bin file to the auto_flash folder
- Put the USB stick back into the Piratebox
- power the piratebox online
... and wait :-)

After the installation, please post the output of

# cat /opt/piratebox/version
# cat /etc/openwrt_release
again.

I hope it will work and we can see a difference.

best regards Matthias

After doing these steps, the USB blinked for 45 min until I off/on the router. After restart, the USB key does not blink, but seems not mounted :

Ok, this is weird. Can you post the complete output of the command
dmesg

Would you mind to try a different USB Stick? That totally looks like an issue with that one.. from the current point of view, I can not imagine another reason. :-(
