Comcast users can't reach piratebox.de for firmware files
January 31, 2015 08:25AM
Hello everyone,

during the last weak we are getting more and more feedback from users that have issues getting the download of the install.zip or the firmware files.
PirateBox.cc (located in Sweden) is running on a different server then the download location. The download location is piratebox.de and that page is located in Germany.

I already talked with my provider and with one user having this problem. It turned out it is a Comcast problem only. I got a traceroute that the connect stucks within the ComCast network.
Please file an issue against Comcast!!

To circumvent the issue using a page-proxy provider like: [www.coralcdn.org]
the corresponding URL would be
Language: PHP
http://stable.openwrt.piratebox.de.nyud.net/
(It worked two days ago)

Best regards
Matthias

what kind of error message do you get?
is it a 404 ?
DNS not resolved?
Domain does not exists?
Timeout?

I'm writing a mail to my hoster, it seems the problems occur for Comcast user.

For debugging this issue I need:

(example for windows user)
nslookup stable.openwrt.piratebox.de
ping stable.openwrt.piratebox.de
traceroute stable.openwrt.piratebox.de

edit from 6th April, 2015:

I created another workaround. Add the following line to /etc/hosts of your computer or PirateBox:
5.150.254.141 stable.openwrt.piratebox.de
That redirects you to a mirror page and you can proceed as normal.

Hi,
but piratebox.cc is ok? *wondering*
is that really the response of the support team?

still looks like a problem on comcast's service.

Is there instructions / "how-to" for manual install through via downloading the individual files?

As of right now i get this error:

/etc/init.d/ext: No external Image-template file found... loading from Internet
Connecting to downloads.piratebox.de (87.237.121.137:80)
wget: can't connect to remote host (87.237.121.137): Connection timed out
/etc/init.d/ext: ERROR: wget failed... cancel

This is through manual install.
I am going to try the auto install instructions and post back in a bit.

grr. I can only repeat: "File a COMPLAIN against Comcast for routing issues to IP 87.237.121.137"

I haven't created a mirror for the download page.. But with that work around, you should be able to download the installation files.

By preloading the installation file for the auto install to the usb drive i was able to successfully install piratebox with a comcast connection using your mirror.
However the issue now is trying to get the imageboard and media server installed. The fresh PB gets disconnected and the hosts file reset during the original installation process.
In my attempts to edit the hosts file again to include the mirror link in order to install the optional features i ended up damaging the hosts file and my PC could not longer obtain an IP from my PB and i was also having trouble resolving at one point.
But good news is that the mirror is working!

**Update After trying again:
I edited the /etc/hosts file. Then reboot router afterwords i gained internet access then proceeded to run the command to install the image board, This was the results:
root@piratebox:~# /etc/init.d/piratebox nodns
root@piratebox:~# opkg -d ext install piratebox-mod-imageboard
Unknown package 'piratebox-mod-imageboard'.
Collected errors:
 * opkg_install_cmd: Cannot install package piratebox-mod-imageboard.

Shuting down reconfiguring hosts file again and then doing a opkg update fixed this problem.
Then i ran the command to install the image board via manual tutorial. However the image board is not there, instead a listing of the board files and when i click on one it gives me a 500 error.

if you use our auto installation stuff, you should already have a full configured box including imageboard and minidlna

after reading my above post I see I was not clear enough on the steps used.
To clarify how I accomplished an install,
I downloaded and unzipped install_piratebox.zip
from there I copied the "install" folder to my usb drive.
After that I edited my hosts file, then followed the instructions for manual install.
Auto install did not work nor did the manual install. It was a combination of both.

In order to better explain the steps i took, provide a guide for Comcast users who are having trouble with just the PB install and not overtake this thread with my issue concerning the image board, I made a separate thread, with more detailed information located here:

Also unable to access this page through comcast. Using phone

Why not use a magnet link?
OK, it wasn't blocked, just took forever to come up. Should definitely do the magnet link thing though.
Well, here is one for the Pi if anybody can use it

Of course, you probably shouldn't trust me. There should be and md5 posted on the site and maybe some signing going on. Ah well...
