Recommendations for travel router that just works?

I'm unwilling to pay $150 for an MR3040 that sold for $35 when it was new. Is there something that's currently available on Amazon for $30-40 that just works with the right firmware? Preferably something with an external antenna - I need my PirateBox to have as much range as possible for outdoor use.
