Fonera 2.0 PirateBox
November 29, 2012 07:23AM
I had a Fonera 2.0g laying around and thought it would be pimp to convert it into a piratebox.
So far i was able to flash OpenWRT kamikaze 8.09.2 firmware to the device.
I was wondering if anyone has done this already, i didn't see anyone mention anything in the forums yet.

root@OpenWrt:/tmp# wget [piratebox.aod-rpg.de]
root@OpenWrt:/tmp# opkg install piratebox*

try to install the listed dependencies packages manual

opkg install <package-name>

Then you may find the package which is missing... but it should work, i think

too bad. fs-ext4 is a kernel module, so you need to use another (newer) openwrt-image

crap, i dont think the 2.0g supports anything newer

Why?

at this point of the open-wrt howto downloading.the.openwrt.images

Try those both images instead of the "kamikaze" ones:

Language: PHP
http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/atheros/openwrt-atheros-vmlinux.lzma http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/atheros/openwrt-atheros-root.squashfs

i was able to use the luci web interface to flash this image to it
[downloads.openwrt.org]

i had to configure the okpg.conf toand change the url from
src/gz snapshots [downloads.openwrt.org]
to
src/gz snapshots [downloads.openwrt.org]

and i was able to download and install the pkgs smileys with beer

so ive got piratebox running on a fonera now smiling smiley

one problem i see is when 2 people try to upload at the same time the box locks up
not sure if its because lighttpd is trying to push the data through memory to write out the file and the fon is running out of memory. anyone see this issue yet on other devices?

The upload problem is not a lighttpd problem.
PirateBox uses a python script, which writes directly onto the usb drive without storing it into the memory.

It may be a CPU Power-Problem with your "small" fonera- it only has 200Mhz, hasn't it?
