Pirate Box On TL-MR3420
January 27, 2012 05:01AM
I recently purchased the TP-Link MR3420 v1.2 and got Pirate Box running on it within an hour. I had no problem installing open wrt on it and installing pirate box was easy and fast.

I highly recommend this cheap router ($44) for making a PB.

Voltage is 12V. Works like a charm. Good signal range.

If you can figure out which image you need, you can use them as well.

Yeah I found this link on the openwrt forum. According to one user it was successfully used back in January.
[downloads.openwrt.org]
Do you think it'll still work?

There are two possibilities:

1. It works and the wiki-pages are outdated
2. It don't work and the wiki pages are up to date :/

Maybe asking in opentwrt forums is useful

Ha ha! Of course. Probably a good idea I check before potential brickage. Especially considering there have been some issues with entering failsafe for some on this device. Will keep you all posted.
Cheers,

Any word? I'm considering buying one and want to know what problems people have with it.

I haven't had a chance to try this out yet but I plan to in the next couple of weeks.

Wish me luck.

Great related success!

So I ended up getting a MR3220 with one antenna instead of the 3420 because I'm planning on plugging an external wifi extender on to it and thought that having two antennas might mess with that. From what I can tell from the OpenWRT site is that it's a pretty similar process.

I used the OEM easy install instructions and used this firmware file. Then I continued from step 10 of the usual process.

It's all working fine although I think I disrupted the imageboard install process so that's not quite right but I do have standard PirateBox functionality.

Go Team PB!

Peace,
Dr H

No not that I can think of.

I had a few glasses of red wine while in the process which didn't help. smileys with beer

Today my TL-MR3420 V1.3 arrived. Since I read about some Problems with V1.3 and Open-WRT I'm looking forward to try the
openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-mr3420-v1-squashfs-factory.bin
According to some Forum-posts ( [forum.openwrt.org] ), r33312 should work. I'll post an update when its done.

Cheers

Follow up:
The installation of the Open-WRT-Firmware was a piece of cake. smiling smiley

I had some trouble to find the hint, that the device has to have 192.168.1.1 but after that, the installation and configuration following the step-by-step instructions was easy.

Final result: My TL MR-3420 is up and running as a 32GB PirateBox in Munich smiling smiley

Oh, just one add on:

I used a brand new TL MR-3420 V1.3 since the older Versions are not sold anymore.
