Piratebox 0.5.1 - iOS Captive Portal Issues
June 13, 2012 05:10AM
Hey PBers!

I finally got the chance to install the last version of PB including the imageboard and it is pretty much all running well. I seem to be having issues with iOS devices getting stuck at the captive portal.

After connecting via wifi the page automatically comes up in the restricted "Log in" version of Safari.

I've tried reinstalling the entire PB with no luck.

Cheers,
Dr H

Restricted "Log in" ?
"captive portal"?

So you're getting a ip adress and all together

Can you explain a bit more please?

I think I can explain what he means.
When you open an AP that requires login (I guess when it detects redirection), iOS doesn't open a browser page, but instead what he calls a "captive portal". It's like a popup window with which you have very little interaction, and closing it causes the WiFi connection to abort.

Thanks for the further explanation Lux Æterna . I didn't communicate my issue very well Matthias.

I'm in the process of re-installing the device at the moment. Once I've got it running again I'll send through a more detailed description.

Cheers,
Benet

OK.

I am using a iPhone 3GS running iOS5 and I've also experienced this on my work iPad. When I select the PB as the wifi network I want to connect to it automatically pops up with a window which looks like this:

I can view pages and files within this view but mp3s don't stream. You can also chat in the chatbox. If I hit cancel it closes and drops the wifi connection. If I try switching apps to Safari the connection also drops.

I believe this page is called a 'captive portal' as it is used for validating your credentials before if lets you use a more fuller featured browser. I didn't have this problem before on version 0.3.x of PB, it's only started happening since I upgrade to 0.5.x

If there's anything else I can tell you to help you help me just holla.

Peace,
Dr H

I researched about this topic today and
... Oh, I'm having a typo in the folder for the apple success message!

Can you please try to rename the folder and test it again:

  mv /opt/piratebox/www/libary /opt/piratebox/www/library

Just thought that I would contribute what i know to this:

That "Captive Portal" is called WebSheet. It is the minimal version of safari that opens wifi authentication pages. To bypass it and join PBox wifi just go into your wifi settings and uncheck "Auto-Login" for the network name of your box. Now why you would want to do this as opposed to simply updating it is beyond me, but nonetheless, that's how I fixed it for the month or so it was an issue for me. Thanks Matthias for fixing this issue!

Hi Hokie,
thanks for the information.
The problem is, that not every iOS User knows about that and we already had this solution before switching our background "framework". smiling smiley
