Format for videos

Is there a certain format I should be using to get videos to play sound? I used VLC to rip some DVD's recently and I don't get any sound playing on my movies with MP4 format.

Also, is there something else I can use besides piratebox? it was easy to set up for the most part but I dont like how the files are organized. E.G. they are not named properly

I had issues with a lot of file formats. (I cram a LOT of video on these babies.) in my experience transcoding (or ripping) to MP4 with Handbrake was the best option.

Wow thats weird I used handbrake today to make some videos. Worked like a charm. my videos are playing with ease with the use of handbrake.
